FEATURES
🏰 The 1998 vintage in Burgundy was generally considered good, particularly for red wines, offering a balance of fruit and structure. Rene Engel's Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru from 1998, coming from a prestigious Grand Cru vineyard, would be expected to show significant complexity and aging potential. While specific tasting notes for this exact vintage are not readily available, Clos de Vougeot wines are known for their power, depth, and ability to evolve beautifully over decades. Expect a wine with a rich bouquet of dark fruits, earthy undertones, and a refined tannic structure that has softened with age. 【 A testament to Grand Cru longevity 】. 🍴 This mature Grand Cru Burgundy demands a pairing that respects its complexity. Classic choices include roasted lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, or feathered game like pigeon or quail. It would also be exceptional with truffle-infused dishes or a selection of fine, aged Burgundy cheeses. 🥂 An outstanding choice for a very special anniversary, a significant birthday, or a serious collector's tasting. It's a wine that invites contemplation and appreciation of its long journey. Serving Advice: For a wine of this age, careful handling is key. Stand the bottle upright for several days to allow any sediment to settle. Be prepared for a delicate cork; a two-pronged Ah-So opener or a Durand is recommended. Gentle decanting for a short period (30-60 minutes) can help separate the wine from sediment and allow it to open up, but avoid prolonged aeration which could diminish its delicate aromas. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (61-64°F).
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
