🏰 The 2020 vintage in Beaujolais, particularly for Fleurie, is hailed as the 'vintage of the decade' due to exceptional weather conditions. A mild, frost-free spring led to early budburst and flowering, followed by a hot, dry summer. While drought was a concern, timely rain before harvest saved the vintage, resulting in perfectly matured, healthy grapes. The wines are noted for their ripeness, freshness, and balance, with a beautiful purple colour and fruity, aromatic profiles. Some wines gained power with notes of black fruits and spices, while others remained delicate with lively aromas and fine tannins. Despite higher alcohol levels in some instances, they are beautifully balanced by refreshing acidity. 【Exceptional balance of ripeness, freshness, and balance】.
🍴 This vibrant Fleurie Vieilles Vignes 2020, with its red fruit character and silky tannins, would be a delightful match for roasted chicken with herbs, duck confit, or even a rich mushroom risotto. For a lighter touch, consider charcuterie boards or grilled salmon.
🥂 This wine is perfect for a relaxed gathering with friends, a celebratory dinner, or simply enjoying on a quiet evening. Its approachable yet complex nature makes it versatile for various occasions.
BACKGROUND
Georges Descombes is a highly respected figure in the natural wine movement in Beaujolais. Based in Villié-Morgon, he follows the philosophies of Jules Chauvet, practicing organic farming and minimal intervention winemaking. Fleurie is known as the 'Queen of Beaujolais' for its floral and elegant style. Descombes' 'Vieilles Vignes' (Old Vines) Fleurie is crafted from older Gamay vines, offering greater depth and concentration. It is a beautifully perfumed wine with notes of violet, red berries, and a silky texture.
