🏰The 2000 Domaine Rene Engel Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru is a 【stellar example from a vintage that, despite being considered mediocre for Burgundy overall, yielded exceptional wines from top sites like Grands Echezeaux】. Neal Martin rated it 95 points, describing a fleshy ripe cranberry, briary, and rose petal nose with hints of kirsch. The palate is elegant, poised, and regal, energetic and tensile, with harmonious and supple textures, and a hint of brown spice on the finish. This wine has transcended its era, embodying a finesse indicative of stellar aging potential.
🍴 This mature Grand Cru Burgundy is best paired with refined dishes such as roasted duck breast with cherry sauce, pan-seared foie gras, truffle-infused risotto, or delicate game birds. Its elegance also complements aged Comté or Gruyère cheese.
🥂 An exceptional choice for a milestone anniversary, a serious wine tasting, or a luxurious gift for a Burgundy collector. This wine is a testament to the legacy of Philippe Engel and offers a profound drinking experience. For older wines like this, expect some bottle variation. The cork and capsule should be handled with care. Decanting for 30-60 minutes is often beneficial to allow the wine to open up and shed any sediment, but be mindful of very old wines that can fade quickly once exposed to air. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
