🏰The 2017 Penfolds Grange is 【Australia's most celebrated wine and a Heritage Icon of South Australia, with an unbroken line of vintages since 1951】. This cooler vintage Shiraz blend from South Australia offers concentrated yet not jammy fruit, with vibrant acidity. It's the seventh-ever Grange to be exclusively Shiraz, showcasing Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale fruit. Expect a dense, deep crimson-red color. The nose is rampant with blueberry, plum, dark chocolate, coconut, vanilla, dill, cherry pit, violet candy, cured tobacco, savory herbs, and exotic spices. The palate delivers an advancing wave of flavors—liquorice, soy, malt, burnt vanilla marshmallow, and dark chocolate—with a creamy/velvety texture, tight tannins, and ebullient acidity. Pure huckleberry, boysenberry, and wild blackberry fruit are supported by dense, polished tannins, leading to an epic finish of dried rosemary, sage, cigar box, dried apricot, and sandalwood.
🍴 This powerful Shiraz demands equally robust food. Pair it with grilled rested ribeye with pepper, shoulder of lamb with rosemary, grilled kangaroo filet, aged cheddar, or hard sheep's milk cheese. For a truly special meal, consider 9+ marble wagyu eye fillet or slow-roasted ox cheek and tail in PX sauce.
🥂 A wine for significant celebrations, serious collectors, or a luxurious dinner where it can truly be the star. Serve at 17-18°C and decant for at least 2 hours, or longer if served young, to allow its complex layers to unfold. This vintage has a peak drinking window from 2027 to 2060.
