🏰The 2004 Rene Engel Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a deep, powerful Pinot Noir from a Grand Cru appellation known for its red wines. Burghound rated it 89-92 points, noting 【pungent wood spice and a reserved nose of black cherry, plum, and ripe cassis】. The palate is rich, full, earthy, and moderately robust, with muscular full-bodied flavors culminating in solid power and excellent length. The wood, while not subtle, is well-integrated. Other tasting notes describe it as a suave, jammy, and medium-bodied wine with fruity, satin-textured black cherry notes. It's refined and displays excellent depth, with a velvety mouthfeel. This wine has impressed critics and would benefit from some cellaring, though it should be approaching maturity now. Some recent notes describe it as airy with red raspberry and pomegranate flavors, a truly special experience.
🍴This powerful and refined Grand Cru Burgundy would be an excellent match for classic French cuisine. Consider roasted game birds like pigeon or pheasant, beef tenderloin with a rich mushroom sauce, or a traditional Boeuf Bourguignon. It also pairs well with aged cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère. One reviewer specifically mentioned pairing it perfectly with duck.
🥂The Rene Engel Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2004 is a wine for a very special occasion, a celebratory dinner, or a serious tasting of Grand Cru Burgundy. Its complexity and evolution make it a contemplative wine, ideal for sharing with fellow connoisseurs.
For a wine of this age (2004), it's recommended to serve it at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F). Decanting for 1-2 hours might be beneficial to allow it to open up and to separate any sediment. As with any older wine, handle the bottle gently and be prepared for a potentially fragile cork.
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
