🏰 The 2001 vintage in Bordeaux, though following the acclaimed 2000, was an excellent year, often considered underrated. Many wines from the Right Bank, and indeed some from the Left Bank, showed quality that rivaled or even surpassed the 2000 vintage in the eyes of some critics. Carruades de Lafite is the second wine of the prestigious Château Lafite Rothschild, offering a more accessible expression of the estate's terroir while still possessing significant aging potential. The 2001 Carruades de Lafite would likely display classic Bordeaux characteristics of blackcurrant, cedar, and tobacco, with a refined structure and elegant tannins that have softened beautifully over time. 【Underrated Bordeaux vintage from a prestigious estate】.
Given its age, this wine is likely to be quite evolved. Expect tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and dried fruit to complement any remaining primary fruit. The cork and capsule may be fragile, so handle with care. Consider using a Durand opener or an Ah-So to minimize the risk of cork breakage. Decanting is highly recommended for older wines to separate sediment and allow the wine to breathe, typically for 30-60 minutes, but taste periodically to ensure it doesn't fade too quickly. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
🍴 This elegant Bordeaux would be a perfect match for classic French cuisine like roasted lamb with rosemary, beef Wellington, or mature hard cheeses. For an Eastern pairing, consider a refined Cantonese braised pigeon or a delicate beef stir-fry.
🥂 An exceptional choice for a milestone celebration, a formal dinner, or a serious wine tasting focusing on mature Bordeaux. Its pedigree and age make it a truly special bottle.
The grapes are harvested from vineyards on the Carruades plateau, adjacent to the Château Lafite flagship vineyards, sharing similar terroir.
The winery selects only one-third of its wine each year for the Lafite flagship, using the remainder for Carruades.
The Lafite flagship is aged in 100% new barrels, which are then used for Carruades the following year.
In the early 20th century, Carruades de Lafite Rothschild became a bestseller after export, gaining more fame than the Lafite flagship. Some sommeliers promoted Carruades de Lafite as a special wine above the Lafite flagship. To correct this unintentional error, the winery renamed Carruades de Lafite to Moulin des Carruades until the 1980s, when they decided to revert to Carruades de Lafite Rothschild...
The 1974 Château Lafite mentioned in an article published in the February 13, 1978 issue of New York Magazine... Rothschild's second label is called Moulin des Carruades.
