【A classic vintage of Ducru-Beaucaillou, offering a pure, precise, and deep nose of sweet cassis and cigar ash, with a powerful structure that promises decades of evolution.】 The 1986 vintage at Ducru-Beaucaillou fell within a notoriously patchy period where the cellar was likely impacted by TCA or a TCA-like taint from 1986 to 1994, leading to potential bottle variation. However, pristine bottles show exceptionally well. Some bottles were re-released after refurbishment in 2011, identifiable by a back label, and many were recorked at the château in 2001.
This wine presents a medium brick color with a touch of brown, sometimes appearing almost black. The nose reveals growing notes of dried mulberries, kirsch, raisin cake, celery salt, dried bay leaves, truffles, charcuterie, old leather sofa, and fallen leaves. Expect fine intensity with dark plum, blackberry, graphite, oyster shell, and well-integrated oak, alongside sweet red and black currant fruit, wet stones, spice, and flowers. With air, notes of cassis, leather, a slight horse note, and cigar box emerge. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a powerful structure, firm, chewy tannins, and bold freshness supporting muscular dried berries. It is deep, full-bodied, complex, and tangy, with outstanding focus and a lovely core of fruit, ripe, well-measured tannins, and a long, complex, soil-driven finish, culminating in a dried mint kick.

This mature Saint-Julien is an ideal partner for classic French cuisine, such as roasted lamb rack with herbs, beef Wellington, or rich game dishes like venison stew. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses.

This 1986 Ducru-Beaucaillou is aging well and still has tremendous upside. It is just starting to drink, but like many top 1986 Médoc wines, it has room to grow and will benefit from further cellaring, with an anticipated maturity extending to 2030 or even 2075. This makes it a superb choice for a significant anniversary, a serious wine tasting, or a special occasion where a truly evolved and complex wine is desired.
Serving Suggestion: Given its age, expect some bottle variation and be prepared for older corks and capsules. It is recommended to pop and pour, allowing it about 30 minutes to an hour to open up, as it will continue to evolve in the glass. Decanting for 1-2 hours can also be beneficial to separate any sediment and allow its complex tertiary aromas to fully emerge. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F).
