FEATURES
🏰 The 2004 Auguste Clape Cornas hails from a vintage in the Rhône Valley that benefited from ample sunshine and less rainfall, yielding balanced and expressive wines. For Clape, 2004 is noted as a classic and pleasant vintage, not overly powerful but with significant aging potential, capable of evolving beautifully for 15 to 18 years. Auguste Clape's Cornas is celebrated for its richness, depth, and superb aging capabilities, preserving the authentic character of the Cornas terroir. These wines are often described as bright, clean, yet possessing a savage and meaty intensity. Robert Parker awarded the 2004 vintage 90 points. 【 Auguste Clape is a benchmark producer in Cornas, a pioneer who was the first to bottle his own wine in the appellation in 1957. 】 🍴 This powerful and complex Syrah is a superb match for robust, flavourful dishes. It pairs wonderfully with red meat dishes in sauce, such as a classic roast beef or a rich wild boar stew. For a more evolved wine, consider wild game like deer or duck (confit or magret), or lamb seasoned with rosemary and thyme. Aged cheeses such as Saint-Nectaire or Bleu d'Auvergne would also create a harmonious pairing. 🥂 The 2004 Auguste Clape Cornas is an excellent choice for a serious wine dinner, a gathering of Rhône enthusiasts, or a special occasion where a mature, structured red wine is desired. Given its age, it's advisable to handle the bottle gently, as older corks can be fragile. Decanting for an hour or two before serving at 16-18°C will allow its complex bouquet to fully open up and soften its structured tannins, revealing its full potential.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Auguste Clape is a wine estate located in the Cornas region of the Northern Rhone Valley. The estate was founded by Clape's grandfather, a planter who moved to Cornas from Languedoc after the growers' strike of 1906-07. The estate consists of just 8 hectares (20 acres) of old vines in a prime, sunny, steeply terraced location on the west bank of the Rhone. and a small amount of Saint-Perret Blanc from just 0.2 hectares (0.5 acres) of Marsanne.
