Jacques Prieur, Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru, 2020
🏰 The 2020 Domaine Jacques Prieur Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is hailed as 【a pinnacle of Burgundy Chardonnay and one of the great white vintages in recent memory】, offering a classic profile of citrus and flint. This structured white wine pours a brilliant, pale gold with emerald glints, promising significant extract. On the nose, it unfolds with visceral intensity, revealing layers of scorched lemon peel, toasted hazelnuts, and a distinct flint reduction, alongside vibrant white flowers, acacia honey, salted butter, and fresh brioche. The palate dances with paradoxical weightlessness, broad and muscular yet gripped by fierce, vertical tension, showcasing pure, high-toned Chardonnay fruit leaning towards Pippin apple and white peach, framed by delicate spice from expert oak integration. It's an investment-grade white Burgundy with a crystalline finish of extraordinary length.
🍴 This powerful and complex white Burgundy pairs exquisitely with rich, flavorful dishes. Think roasted poultry, pan-seared scallops with a creamy sauce, or even richer fish like turbot or halibut. Its minerality and acidity also make it a fantastic match for aged Comté or Gruyère cheese. For a luxurious experience, consider lobster or crab dishes.
🥂 Perfect for a celebratory dinner, a significant milestone, or a serious tasting among Burgundy enthusiasts. Its aging potential means it can be cellared for decades, but its current vibrancy also makes it compelling now. Serve chilled, around 10-12°C (50-54°F), to allow its intricate aromas and flavors to fully express themselves.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Jacques Prieur is a relatively large Burgundy producer that makes both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from esteemed vineyard holdings across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, France. The history of the domaine began in the 1860s, with the marriage of Claude Duvergey and Marie Taboureau. They first established the wine and spirits merchant business, Duvergey-Taboureau House, before buying property in Meursault – now the site of the modern Domaine Jacques Priuer.
