🏰 Domaine Rene Engel's Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru from the 1998 vintage is a 【fine, very classic Burgundy red, offering pure fruit complexity from a difficult yet rewarding year for reds in the Côte de Nuits】. Rene Engel was a leading light in Vosne-Romanée, and this Grand Cru was a flagship wine. Expect a 【ruby-colored wine with aromas of plums, wild red berries, rose, and Vosne spice, evolving into notes of asphalt, licorice, and jammy blackberry. The palate is medium to full-bodied, dense, and concentrated, with firm yet approachable tannins and a long, elegant finish that hints at grilled meat and porcini】.
🍴 This powerfully structured red Burgundy is an ideal match for finely prepared red meats, all types of game, stews, or marinated red meats. Consider roast duck in sweet and sour sauce, beef tournedos, or roast chicken with chanterelle mushrooms. It also pairs wonderfully with mature cheeses. For a Cantonese pairing, try braised goose with taro or a rich stewed oxtail.
🥂 This wine is still on the way up and has excellent aging potential, capable of developing for 15 to 20 years. While many 1998s are ready to drink, this Grand Cru will continue to improve, offering a thoroughly enjoyable experience at full maturity.
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
