FEATURES
🏰 The 1989 vintage in Bordeaux is considered a consequential year, with nature conspiring to bestow near-perfect conditions, resulting in wines of opulence and poise. Château Figeac, a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate in Saint-Émilion, produced a wine in 1989 that has been a pleasant surprise to critics, having undergone a "Damascene conversion" and rediscovering its youthful promise. The vintage was marked by drought conditions and an early harvest. This wine is drinking at its absolute apogee at age thirty, described as a brilliant vintage for the château. The bouquet is pure and stunning, soaring from the glass with a complex blend of plums, black cherries, salty soil tones, cigar ash, Figeac's signature herb tones, and toasty new oak. On the palate, it is deep, pure, and full-bodied, with a plush core of fruit, outstanding focus, melting tannins, and a very long, poised, and vibrant finish. Notes of truffles, tobacco, menthol, tanned leather, and subtle praline sweetness are also present. James Suckling praised it as an exquisite old wine with sweet tobacco leaf, gorgeous fruit, and hints of iodine and oyster shell, full-bodied yet polished and refined. 【A brilliant vintage that rivals the 1982 in this superb decade】 Serving Advice: For a wine of this age, stand the bottle upright for several days before serving to allow any sediment to settle. A gentle decanting for 30-60 minutes is often recommended to separate the wine from its sediment and allow it to open up, but avoid excessive aeration. Be mindful of the cork, as older corks can be fragile; a Durand opener or an Ah-So opener might be beneficial. 🍴 Château Figeac 1989 is best paired with classic meat dishes such as ripe red meats like lamb, beef, and game. It also pairs well with refined and aged cheeses, Asian dishes, and rich fish courses like tuna, mushrooms, and pasta. 🥂 An exceptional choice for a significant anniversary, a special celebration, or a contemplative tasting among connoisseurs. It offers a fascinating drinking experience that masterfully showcases the characteristics of Figeac and the potential of a mature Saint-Émilion.
BACKGROUND
Chateau Figeac is a property in the Saint Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. The grand vin is known for its rich nose, silky texture and elegance, and for its aging potential in better vintages. The grapes are vinified in a variety of small vessels, either conical, open-topped wooden vats or stainless steel tanks, which correspond to specific lots in the vineyard. The grand vin is aged in 100-percent new oak barrels, while Petit Figeac is typically aged is for 15 to 18 months in oak barrels, 20 percent of which are new. Approximately 100,000 bottles of the grand vin are produced annually, with about 40,000 of Petit Figeac.
