France Bordeaux Saint-Emilion
FEATURES
🏰 The 1988 Château Magdelaine is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé red Bordeaux, from a property historically renowned for its elegant and long-lived wines. Château Magdelaine has since been merged into Château Bélair-Monange, making this a piece of Bordeaux history. The 1988 vintage in Bordeaux is generally considered a good, classic year, producing wines with solid structure and aging potential, though sometimes overshadowed by the more opulent 1989 and 1990 vintages. While specific tasting notes for the 1988 Magdelaine are scarce, one can anticipate a mature Bordeaux profile: savory, earthy, with notes of dried red fruits, tobacco, and cedar, supported by firm yet integrated tannins and good acidity. This wine embodies the classic old-world style, offering a glimpse into Bordeaux's past. 【Historical Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé from a now-merged estate in a classic vintage】. This is a mature wine, now 38 years old, and should be handled with utmost care. The cork and capsule are likely fragile, so consider using a Durand or Ah-So opener. Decanting for 30-60 minutes is generally advisable to allow any sediment to settle and the wine to open up, but be cautious not to over-aerate, as very old wines can fade quickly. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 15.5°C (60°F), to best appreciate its delicate complexities. 🍴 This aged Bordeaux is an excellent companion for traditional French cuisine. Think roasted lamb, beef Wellington, game birds, or a rich mushroom and truffle dish. It also pairs beautifully with mature, hard cheeses. 🥂 A truly special wine for a significant anniversary, a milestone celebration, or a contemplative tasting among serious collectors. It offers a rare opportunity to experience the elegance and evolution of a classic, aged Saint-Émilion.
BACKGROUND
Chateau Belair Monange is a Bordeaux winery and vineyard rated as a Grand Cru Classe B in the classification of Saint Emilion estates. It makes Merlot-dominant blends with Cabernet Franc and was called Chateau Belair until the 2008 vintage.he estate was formed in the 14th Century, although wine production didn't begin on the property until the 1700s. It is a close neighbor of the Grand Cru Classa A Chateau Ausone and was owned by the same family for much of the 20th Century, even sharing Ausone's cellars. It was managed for a time by Pascal Delbeck, who had been the head winemaker at Ausone but, in 2003, he began selling shares to the Moueix family's negociant business Establissements Jean-Pierre Moueix. By 2008, the Mouiex family was in complete control and the name was changed to Belair Montange.
