FEATURES
🏰 Clos Rougeard is a legendary estate in Saumur-Champigny, renowned for its excellence and respectful, minimalist approach to winemaking. The 2005 vintage was considered a great year for the estate, producing brilliant wines. The Foucault brothers, who ran the estate for over thirty years, were known for their artisanal approach. The estate's Saumur-Champigny "générique" cuvée reveals the domain's style and high standards.
The 2005 Clos Rougeard Saumur-Champigny offers a beautifully complex nose of red berries, black cherries, woodsmoke, soil, gentle cedary notes, a touch of juniper, and fresh thyme. On the palate, it is medium-full, tight, and laser-like in focus, with tangy acids, lovely mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and outstanding length and grip. It's described as perfectly balanced and ideally silky, with red fruit and ripe pepper notes, light smoky notes, fine tension, and good length. Some notes mention a "classy Cab Franc" profile with spice, flint, and macerated cranberries. 【 Legendary Loire Cabernet Franc from a great vintage 】
🥂 While not as old as pre-1980, a 2005 vintage is still mature. It's advisable to handle the bottle gently to avoid disturbing any sediment. Decanting for 1-2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open up and express its full complexity, especially given its "tight" and "laser-like" focus in its youth. Ensure the wine is served at a cool cellar temperature, around 16°C.
🍴 Clos Rougeard red wines pair perfectly with red meats, game, braised dishes, or aged cheeses. Specifically, it would be excellent with hearty red meats, lamb stew, or meat cooked in sauce. Examples include farm-raised chicken in wine, roast veal with chanterelles, or beef carpaccio.
🥂 This wine is suitable for a special dinner, a gathering of wine connoisseurs, or a celebratory meal where a refined and complex red wine is desired. It's a wine that brings a certain gravitas and can be a highlight of a gastronomic experience.
