Comte Armand, Pommard Clos Des Epeneaux 1er Cru, 1994
🏰 The 1994 vintage in Burgundy was generally considered challenging, with some producers, even top ones like DRC, finding their wines disappointing. However, a prestigious 1er Cru from a meticulous producer like Comte Armand can transcend vintage difficulties. Their Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru is a monopole, meaning they are the sole owners, allowing for exceptional control and expression of terroir. Now at 30 years old, this wine has reached a beautiful stage of maturity. Expect a complex bouquet of dried red fruits, leather, tobacco, and earthy forest floor notes, characteristic of aged Pommard. The palate should be robust yet refined, with softened, integrated tannins and a long, savoury finish. 【A rare monopole 1er Cru from a legendary Burgundy producer, showcasing elegant maturity】.
🥂 This mature Pommard is ideal for a special dinner celebrating a significant personal achievement or a gathering of Burgundy enthusiasts. Its contemplative nature makes it perfect for a focused tasting experience.
🍴 This robust yet elegant red Burgundy pairs wonderfully with hearty, flavourful dishes. Consider roasted game meats like venison or wild boar, a rich beef stew, or classic coq au vin. For a refined Eastern pairing, a slow-cooked lamb shank with aromatic spices or a rich mushroom and truffle hotpot would be excellent choices, complementing the wine's earthy and savoury notes.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Comte Armand is a Burgundy wine producer located in the Beaune-Cupoma region. It is famous for its Pinot Noir, especially from the estate's premier monopole vineyard, Clos de Epeneaux. Pinot. The domaine has been owned by the Armand family for nearly two centuries. During the French Revolution, the church confiscated 5 hectares (12 acres) of vineyards. For more than 100 years, the domaine consisted only of single-pole vineyards until 1994. The company was expanded in 1988 with additional plots at Volnay and later Auxey-Duresses. The winery now farms 9 hectares (22 acres) of vines organically, with an average age of 50 years and some up to 80 years old.
