WINE REGION
France Burgundy Richebourg
FEATURES
🏰 The 1980 Burgundy vintage was initially underestimated and not warmly received, partly due to protracted malolactic fermentations and an unflattering assessment by the trade. However, opinions shifted over time, with Robert Parker later describing it as "one of the most underrated and pleasing red wine vintages…of the decade." Clive Coates also lauded the finest Côte de Nuits wines as "outstanding." The Côte de Nuits, particularly Vosne-Romanée where Richebourg is located, produced the best wines in 1980. Today, the best 1980 red Burgundies are considered profound wines, drinking at their apogee. Richebourg is known for possessing some of the silky character of Romanée-Conti and the firmness of La Tâche, resulting in a sumptuous wine with power and stamina. This vintage offers a wonderfully expressive, complex, and highly perfumed nose, with spicy sous-bois infused aromas. Expect a heart-stopping bouquet of peonies, orange rind, hoisin, clove, and cardamom, mingled with beautifully pure notes of raspberries and plums. It is full-bodied, velvety, and enveloping, intensely perfumed, with an ample core of fruit and melting tannins. The wine retains a beautifully intense medium weight, with mineral-driven flavors displaying excellent length and wonderful complexity, showcasing exceptional purity of expression. 【An "underrated and pleasing" vintage, now at its apogee, offering profound complexity and exceptional purity from a top Grand Cru site】. 🥂 This 1980 Richebourg is a truly mature and potentially fragile wine. Use a two-pronged cork puller (Durand) to minimize the risk of cork breakage. Decanting for 1-2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to breathe and to separate any sediment. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F), to best appreciate its delicate aromas and flavors. 🍴 Pinot Noir from this region generally pairs well with duck, goose, and game birds. Richebourg specifically offers a generous bouquet of red and black berry and violet aromas, embellished with notes of undergrowth and spices, making it powerful and attractively full-bodied in the mouth, with aromas of undergrowth and leather. Consider pairings such as grilled venison backstrap, venison casserole, or even richer dishes like Bourbon Little Smokies or Buffalo Chicken Totchos. 🥂 A rare and exceptional wine for a very special celebration, a milestone anniversary, or a dedicated tasting for serious Burgundy collectors.
