FEATURES
🏰 The 1964 vintage is a legendary year for Barolo, earning the top rating of five stars plus from Italian wine authorities and widely regarded as one of the three standout years of the 1960s. Described as "splendidly balanced and intensely scented," these wines were built for a long life, and well-stored examples still show remarkable vitality in the 2020s. It was a very hot vintage with a late harvest and a huge crop, initially presenting with exceptionally high tannins that required significant time to open up. Today, a 1964 Barolo can offer vibrant red fruit, beautifully integrated soil tones, and fully resolved tannins, with a gorgeous nose of dried red berries, cherry pips, spices, dried mushrooms, earth, and tarry notes. The palate is often velvety and mature, with fine supporting tannins and notes of red cherries, dry liquorice, autumn leaves, mushrooms, and rose petals. 【A legendary, five-star vintage with exceptional aging potential】
Serving Advice: For a wine of this venerable age, provenance and storage history are paramount. Expect the cork and capsule to be fragile, so use a Durand or an Ah-So opener. Decanting is highly recommended to separate any sediment and allow the wine to breathe, but do so carefully and observe its evolution. Old Barolos can be unpredictable, sometimes needing one to two hours of air to fully express themselves, but their window of beauty can be brief. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16-18°C.
🍴 This aged Barolo is a magnificent partner for rich, traditional Piedmontese cuisine. Classic pairings include Brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), truffle dishes like tajarin pasta with Alba white truffle, or a creamy mushroom risotto. Strong, aged cheeses such as Castelmagno, Gorgonzola, or Parmigiano Reggiano would also be exceptional.
🥂 This is a wine for a truly momentous occasion – a milestone anniversary, a significant birthday, or a contemplative evening dedicated to appreciating a piece of vinous history. It's a testament to the enduring power and elegance of Nebbiolo, best shared with fellow connoisseurs.
