FEATURES
🏰 The 1985 La Gardine Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a 【classic expression of this Southern Rhône appellation, offering a mature and complex profile from a well-regarded vintage】. Château de la Gardine is a well-established producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for its traditional winemaking. The 1985 vintage in the Southern Rhône was generally considered very good, producing wines with good structure and aging potential. At over 30 years old, this wine would have developed beautiful tertiary aromas and flavors. Expect notes of dried red and black fruits, leather, tobacco, garrigue, and earthy undertones. The palate should be smooth and harmonious, with softened tannins and a lingering, savory finish. While specific tasting notes for the 1985 are scarce, general characteristics of mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape from a good vintage would apply. 🍴 This mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape pairs excellently with rich and flavorful dishes such as roasted lamb, beef stew, game meats (like roast pigeon or venison), duck confit, or hearty mushroom dishes. It also complements strong, aged cheeses. 🥂 Ideal for a special family gathering, a dinner with friends who appreciate aged Rhône wines, or a celebration of a significant year. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F). Stand the bottle upright for at least 24 hours before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Decanting for 1-2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open up and to separate any potential sediment, but be gentle to preserve its delicate mature aromas.
BACKGROUND
Château de la Gardine is a 54-hectare (133-acre) wine estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, acquired by well-known négociant Gaston Brunel in 1945 and expanded over the decades. The estate vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape span 52 hectares (128 acres), 48 hectares (117 acres) of which are planted to red varieties and four hectares (10 acres) to white. The property's terroir is composed of loam, limestone, gravel, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape's famous galets, or "pudding stones". It is planted to a range of the appellation's permitted grape varieties, including Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Muscardin, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne and Bourboulenc.
