Michel Lafarge, Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru, 2023
🏰The 2023 Michel Lafarge Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru is a 【structured and age-worthy wine from a top Volnay vineyard, embodying Lafarge's signature elegance and restraint】. This very young wine, from barrel samples, is already showing immense promise. Les Caillerets is known for its stony, austere soils that yield structured, age-worthy wines. Lafarge's version is a standard-bearer: firm, mineral, and built for the cellar. Tasting notes mention purple fruits, dried cranberries, baking spices, an arc of acidity, and dense, creamy mid-palate with shy notes of sweet oak. It's described as having a full and deep crimson color, a restrained yet classy nose, and an exceptional palate with a mineral lift and velvet texture. The 2023 vintage in Burgundy is considered a big success, similar to 2020 and 2022, with generosity but no excesses, and a large crop. This wine will need 15 years to soften.
🍴 Given its youth and structure, it will pair well with robust dishes like roasted game birds (e.g., pheasant, duck), beef tenderloin, or mushroom risotto.
🥂 An excellent choice for serious collectors looking to cellar a promising young Burgundy. Ideal for a future special occasion, perhaps a decade or more from now, to appreciate its full evolution.
