🏰 The 2013 Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge is a provocative offering, standing out as a silver lining in a challenging Rhone vintage, a testament to Chave's masterful ability to turn adversity into advantage. This sensational Hermitage, sourced from heavily granitic plots, offers a symphony of seductive layers with classic, granite-induced notes of smoked dark fruits, graphite, searing minerality, and bouquet garni. Still youthful and tightly coiled, it reveals a bright purple color with ruby at the rim, and an expressive nose of tart raspberry jam, blackberry, crème de cassis, fresh tobacco, olive tapenade, gunpowder, grilled meats, black peppercorns, violets, and lavender. The palate is complex with inorganic earth notes like gravel, petrichor, and tar, along with a hint of mocha or espresso powder, all framed by medium-plus, silky tannins and an incredibly long finish.
🍴 This bold and structured Syrah is best served with all types of classic meat dishes, including veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, and various roasted, braised, barbecued, or grilled preparations. It pairs exceptionally well with dry-aged steak or roasted lamb.
🥂 This age-worthy Hermitage is perfect for a special occasion dinner, a serious wine tasting, or as a significant addition to a fine wine collection. It's a wine that demands attention and rewards patience, ideal for celebrating milestones or enjoying a contemplative evening. Serve at 15.5 degrees Celsius (60 degrees Fahrenheit) to allow the wine to express its freshness and lift. Decanting for at least 3 hours is recommended if drinking now, as it is still youthful and tightly coiled. It will need 7-8 years of cellaring and can keep for 20-25 years or more.
