🏰 The 1986 vintage in the Southern Rhône, while not universally declared a blockbuster, produced some very good wines, especially from dedicated producers like Rayas. Château de Fonsalette, owned by the Reynaud family of Château Rayas, is known for defying its Côtes du Rhône appellation status, producing first-class wines with the same care as their Châteauneuf-du-Pape counterparts. The 1986 Château de Fonsalette Réserve, if well-preserved, would showcase the unique character of aged Rhône Syrah, often blended with Grenache and Cinsault. 【 A Côtes du Rhône defying its appellation with first-class quality. 】
Serving Advice: Given its considerable age, this wine requires careful handling. Stand the bottle upright for at least a week to allow any sediment to settle. Use a specialized opener like an Ah-So or Durand for the old cork. Decant gently for 45-60 minutes to separate from sediment and allow it to open up, but be prepared for it to evolve quickly in the glass. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
🍴 Expect fully developed fruit and rich complexity, with notes of black pepper, subtle black currant, liquorice, bramble, and soil. The tannins and acidity would be subdued and smoothly integrated. Other potential notes include leather, dried fruit, and earthy undertones. This aged Rhône red would be an excellent match for hearty, flavorful dishes such as slow-cooked lamb shanks, roasted game, or rich stews. It also pairs well with mature hard cheeses.
🥂 This wine is ideal for a special occasion that calls for a rare and mature Rhône, such as a significant anniversary or a gathering of serious wine collectors. It offers a unique opportunity to experience the evolution of a well-crafted wine from a respected producer over several decades.
BACKGROUND
Château Rayas is a leading producer in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of the Rhône Valley, France. It is one of the region's most prestigious estates, and its wines fetch some of the highest prices in southern France. The estate covers 22 hectares, with 15 hectares dedicated to vineyards. Most of their vines are planted to Grenache. The estate's red wine is made solely from Grenache. The château's white Châteauneuf-du-Pape is generally made from Grenache Blanc and Clairette in roughly equaly proportions. Château Rayas has been in the Reynaud family since the 1880s.
