FEATURES
1. What is Banyuls? How is it different from Port? “If Port is time treasured by the British, then Banyuls is time preserved by the French.” Banyuls is a Vin Doux Naturel (naturally sweet fortified wine) from southern France, made primarily from Grenache. Fermentation is halted by adding grape spirit to preserve the wine’s natural sweetness. Extended aging then develops complex aromas of caramel, toffee, dried figs, coffee, and walnuts. 2. Is the 1966 vintage still good to drink today? Absolutely—in fact, it is at one of the most captivating stages of its life. Banyuls is an oxidatively aged sweet wine, designed to evolve gracefully over decades. After nearly 60 years of aging, the 1966 vintage offers beautifully layered notes of walnut, hazelnut, toffee, caramel, coffee, and cocoa. 3. Should I finish the bottle quickly after opening? No. Once opened, simply keep it refrigerated. It will remain in excellent condition for several weeks, and often one to two months. Its remarkable stability makes it perfect for enjoying gradually, one glass at a time. 4. Is it overly sweet? “It is sweet—but it is much more than sweetness.” Thanks to decades of maturation, the sweetness is beautifully balanced by freshness and complexity, resulting in a rich yet refined palate rather than a syrupy one. 5. What foods pair best with it? Highly recommended pairings include: Dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher) Tiramisu Caramel desserts Walnut tart Blue cheese Foie gras Many enthusiasts also enjoy it simply as an after-dinner wine, without any food. 6. Why is the 1966 vintage especially collectible? The 1966 vintage has matured for nearly 60 years. Rather than bottling it early, the producer kept the wine aging in cask until 2023, when it was finally bottled and released—making it a remarkable expression of time and patience. 7. Does it need decanting? No decanting is necessary. Simply open the bottle and allow it to rest for 10–20 minutes before serving. For the best experience, serve it at 12–16°C (54–61°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and layered flavors.
