🏰 The 1988 Carruades de Lafite, the second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, is a classic Pauillac that has aged gracefully. Critics have noted it as well-made and even more complete and deeper than the 1989 and 1990 vintages. It shares the classic lead pencil, mineral, and curranty character found in the Grand Vin. Tasting notes reveal a savoury, full-on meaty nose with attractive smoky edges, alongside cassis and dark fruits. The palate is medium-bodied with melted tannins, black currant, a hint of leather, and a suggestion of undergrowth, leading to a long, slightly drying finish. It offers a beautiful nose of currant and dark chocolate. 【 Classic old-school Pauillac with remarkable aging potential 】. This wine still possesses plenty of red fruit freshness and soft tannins, showcasing youthfulness without rudeness.
Serving Advice: For a wine of this age, handle with care. The cork may be fragile, so a Durand opener or similar device is recommended. Decant gently for 30-60 minutes to allow it to breathe and separate from any sediment, but be mindful of its age to avoid over-aeration. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
🥂 This 1988 Carruades de Lafite is perfect for a special anniversary dinner or a sophisticated gathering of wine connoisseurs who appreciate the elegance of mature Bordeaux. It's a wine for reflection and enjoyment of its evolved complexities.
🍴 This elegant red Bordeaux blend pairs beautifully with classic meat dishes such as prime filet, steak frites, roasted lamb, or beef tenderloin.
The grapes are harvested from vineyards on the Carruades plateau, adjacent to the Château Lafite flagship vineyards, sharing similar terroir.
The winery selects only one-third of its wine each year for the Lafite flagship, using the remainder for Carruades.
The Lafite flagship is aged in 100% new barrels, which are then used for Carruades the following year.
In the early 20th century, Carruades de Lafite Rothschild became a bestseller after export, gaining more fame than the Lafite flagship. Some sommeliers promoted Carruades de Lafite as a special wine above the Lafite flagship. To correct this unintentional error, the winery renamed Carruades de Lafite to Moulin des Carruades until the 1980s, when they decided to revert to Carruades de Lafite Rothschild...
The 1974 Château Lafite mentioned in an article published in the February 13, 1978 issue of New York Magazine... Rothschild's second label is called Moulin des Carruades.
