FEATURES
🏰 The 2004 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte Rôtie La Belle Hélène is a highly regarded Syrah from the Northern Rhône, a region known for producing powerful and elegant red wines. The 2004 vintage in the Northern Rhône was generally very good, characterized by early spring frosts followed by a magnificent summer, leading to a rewarding harvest. This wine is often considered one of the top cuvées of the vintage, with Stéphane Ogier comparing his 2004s to 2000, noting the elegant, almost Pinot-like character of Côte Rôtie. It boasts waves of creamy raspberry fruit, lush blackberry, dark plum, and spices, framed by wonderfully supple tannins. Ethereal secondary notes of green olive, sage, earthy, and smoky undertones derived from the schistose terroir are also present. The palate is medium-bodied, with refined tannins and graceful acidity, leading to a long, elegant finish. 【 A harmonious and complex Côte Rôtie, showcasing elegance and significant aging potential from a successful Rhône vintage. 】 🥂 This Côte Rôtie is an excellent choice for a special dinner, a gathering of Rhône wine lovers, or as a significant addition to a cellar. It's already delicious but has the structure to develop additional complexity through 2015 and beyond, with some suggesting it can age for decades. Serve at a cool room temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F). Decanting for 1-2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully express its aromatic complexity and soften its tannins. Use large, bowl-shaped glasses to capture its intense bouquet. 🍴 Côte Rôtie La Belle Hélène pairs exceptionally well with lamb, game, beef, and poultry. Consider roasted lamb with rosemary, duck confit, a rich beef stew, or even a mushroom and truffle pasta. Its spicy and earthy notes also complement dishes with strong flavors, such as grilled meats or a hearty venison loin. For an Eastern pairing, think of a flavorful Cantonese roast goose or a rich, slow-cooked beef dish.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Stéphane Ogier is a producer in the northern Rhône appellation of Côte Rôtie, France. It is especially well known for varietal Syrah from several highly regarded appellations in the region, but also making small amounts of Viognier from Condrieu and red and white Vin de Pays wine. The domaine was formed by Michel Ogier who had been growing grapes in the village of Ampuis in Côte Rôtie and selling them. Michel's son Stéphane began working at the winery in 1998. The estate had gone by Domaine Michel Ogier, but new vintages now commonly say either Domaine Michel et Stephane Ogier or M&S Ogier d'Ampuis.
