FEATURES
🏰 The 1973 vintage in the Rhône Valley was a mixed but decent year, characterized by a hot and dry summer. However, autumn rains had a slight impact on the harvests. While Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines were generally pleasant, many reds from this vintage lacked body and concentration due to high yields. Most wines from this year are likely past their peak, though some very well-made examples might still offer enjoyable drinking. Domaine Jacques Mestre, a family with generations of winemaking tradition, crafts this classic Châteauneuf du Pape from a traditional blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault. These wines are known for their rich dark fruit flavors, earthy spice notes, and silky tannins. Aged in large oak foudres, they typically possess a firm structure, bold spice, and pepper, with soft cedar wood accompanying a spicy kick and a good long length. For a 1973, one might expect an expressive nose of sweet plum and tea leaves, though it could be a little thin and short on the palate, yet still very much drinkable, showing fully resolved, mellow fruit with notes of tart red fruit, cranberry, cherry, stewed tomato, soy sauce, rosemary, grilled meat, clove, cinnamon, fennel, and thyme. 【 Classic Châteauneuf du Pape from a family with generations of winemaking tradition 】 🥂 This historic Châteauneuf du Pape is ideal for a contemplative evening, a gathering of seasoned wine lovers, or as a special bottle to mark a significant personal milestone. It offers a unique opportunity to experience a wine that has gracefully aged. For a wine of this age, careful handling is crucial. Stand the bottle upright for several days before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Decanting is highly recommended, but should be done gently and just before serving, to separate the wine from its sediment and allow its delicate aromas to emerge. Be prepared for a potentially fragile cork and capsule; an Ah-So or Durand opener is advisable. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F), to best appreciate its evolved character. 🍴 This wine pairs wonderfully with roasted meats, hearty stews, or strong, aged cheeses.
