Chapoutier, Chateauneuf Du Pape Rouge La Bernardine, 1990
The 1990 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape was generally considered excellent, producing wines with uncommon balance, proportion, and finesse. Chapoutier, a prestigious name in the Rhône, converted its 300 hectares of vines to biodynamic viticulture, holding certification since 1999, and is known for harvesting grapes at optimal ripeness. The 1990 La Bernardine shows lovely currant, cherry, chocolate, and smoky oak flavors that are complex and luscious. It has a deep, crimson hue with a complex nose rich in black fruits and peppery accents from Syrah. On the palate, it is delicate but full-bodied with tannins that balance perfectly with acidity and alcohol, leading to a spicy finish with striking persistence. Mature Grenache notes with sweet and funky red fruits and hints of herbs are also observed. 【Uncommon balance, proportion, and finesse from a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape vintage.】
This wine is crafted for extensive aging and is a nice one to serve for a special occasion. It's ideal for a sophisticated dinner party, a celebratory meal, or a gathering of wine connoisseurs who appreciate mature Rhône reds. For a 1990 vintage, expect the cork to be fragile; use a Durand opener or an Ah-So. Decanting for 30-60 minutes can help the wine open up and shed any sediment, but be mindful of its age and avoid over-decanting. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
Perfect to pair with rich dishes like boeuf en daube or rabbit with olives. Other suggestions include grilled lamb chops with garlic and rosemary, duck confit with red wine reduction, or aged Gruyère cheese.
BACKGROUND
Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the most recognizable producers in the Rhône Valley. It is known for its wines from both the north and south of the valley, but in particular for its red and white Hermitage wines, made from Syrah and a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, respectively.Outside of the flagship vineyards in Hermitage, Chapoutier has vineyards across the Rhône, including plots in Côte Rôtie, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Condrieu. These span both single-vineyard expressions and generic AOC-level wines. Chapoutier also makes regional Côtes du Rhône wines, and has viticultural interests in Australia (Domaine Tournon), Portugal and Alsace.
