FEATURES
The 1991 vintage for the Rhône Valley was generally good, with the region largely unaffected by severe spring frosts that impacted other parts of France. A hot, dry summer in July and August was capped by heavy rain at harvest, yet it was considered a "miracle" vintage that produced many gorgeous Northern Rhône Syrahs. This Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle 1991, now fully mature, reveals a healthy dark plum hue with solid bricking at the rim. The nose is a classic La Chapelle, offering ripe black fruits, cured meats, baking spices, subtle soy, game, and hints of chocolate. It presents port-like aromas of chocolate, prune, and earth, with a whiff of V8. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied with richness, sweet tannins, and a plush, soft texture, leading to an outstanding length. Despite its age, it's still remarkably dark in colour, with incredibly spicy and lifted aromatics of potpourri, cigar smoke, and almost minty notes. It's exceedingly savoury, with smoked duck and black olive, backed by remarkably bright, piercing acidity, and a finish of immense length. 【A classic, elegant Hermitage La Chapelle from a "miracle" vintage, renowned for its complex aromatics and impressive longevity.】 Food pairing suggestions include lamb and richer poultry dishes. This 1991 Hermitage La Chapelle is fully mature and has been in its peak drinking window for over 10-15 years. While still offering immense pleasure, it's important to approach it with the understanding that older wines can be delicate. Expect complex tertiary aromas and flavors. The cork and capsule may be fragile; use a Durand or an Ah-So opener for the cork, and handle the bottle gently to avoid disturbing any sediment. Decanting is highly recommended for this wine to allow it to breathe and shed any sediment. Decant slowly and carefully, perhaps an hour or two before serving, but monitor it closely as very old wines can fade quickly once exposed to air. Serve at cellar temperature (around 16-18°C). There's no need to delay gratification, and it will continue drinking nicely for another 8-10 years, with some suggesting it can last until 2030.
