FEATURES
Domaine Prieuré Roch, founded in 1988 by Henri-Frédéric Roch, co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, is renowned for its unique approach to winemaking. The Vosne-Romanée Clos Goillotte is a truly special wine, hailing from a rare 0.55-hectare monopole vineyard nestled in the heart of Vosne-Romanée, mere steps from the legendary La Tâche. Historically, its wines were exclusively for the Prince of Conti's household, remaining largely unknown until Roch acquired the property in 1988, making these exceptional bottlings available to the public for the first time. The approximately 50-year-old vines are meticulously farmed using organic and biodynamic practices, resulting in extremely low yields, typically less than 2,000 bottles per vintage. The wines are vinified with whole clusters, and sulfur is used only once during racking. 【Produced from a rare 0.55-hectare monopole vineyard, once the private garden of the Prince of Conti, with extremely low yields】. The 2008 vintage displays a relatively light, evolved color. On the nose, it is expressive and ethereal, offering notes of orange zest, raspberry fruit, and intriguing spicy nuances like nutmeg. Some tasters have noted a slight vegetal tincture that dissipates with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with soft, fleshy fruit, though some found it to lack a bit of depth and structure. Other descriptors include dried strawberry, truffle, earthy, leather, mint, anise, fennel, black olive, blackberry, dried flowers, peony, cream, toast, hay, and grapefruit. William Kelley scored it 90 points, observing it "lacks the vibrancy, purity and definition that I hoped to find" compared to other 2008s from the estate. Conversely, Rupert awarded it 94 points, describing it as "penetrating, mouthfilling, long, bursting with red fruit and earth energy - exciting." 🍴 While specific food pairings for this vintage were not readily available, as a red Burgundy (Pinot Noir), it would classically complement roasted poultry such as duck or chicken, game birds, earthy mushroom dishes, and a selection of mild, aged cheeses. 🥂 Given its rarity, historical significance, and the unique winemaking philosophy of Prieuré Roch, this wine is perfectly suited for very special occasions, intimate tastings with discerning Burgundy connoisseurs, or as a contemplative wine to be savored on its own. Its age suggests it is a wine for appreciation and reflection rather than a casual drink. For a 2008 Burgundy, expect an evolved color and complex tertiary aromas alongside any remaining fruit. Older corks can be fragile, so consider using a Durand or an Ah-So opener. Decanting is often recommended for older wines to allow them to breathe and to separate any sediment, but proceed gently and monitor the wine closely for signs of fading. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, ideally between 16-18°C (60-64°F), in appropriate Burgundy glasses to fully appreciate its nuances.
BACKGROUND
Founded in 1988, Domaine Prieuré Roch is a sought-after, minimal-intervention Burgundy producer with vineyards spread throughout the Côte d'Or, but primarily in Saint-Georges. Wines are made from several designated appellations, with Pinot Noir dominating the red wines, and there are also Chardonnay vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. Currently covering over 14 hectares (34 acres), it is home to a number of highly regarded Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards.
