FEATURES
The 1998 vintage in the Rhône Valley is considered one of the finest, often compared to the legendary 1990. Despite severe April frosts that significantly reduced yields, particularly in Côte-Rôtie, an idyllic summer followed, leading to a vintage of remarkable quality. This 1998 Jamet Côte Brune is now beautifully mature, offering a savory and generous profile. The nose is rich with olives, lifted red fruits, a hint of licorice, and meaty undertones. On the palate, it's seductive with notes of grouse, black peppercorn, wood smoke, dried rosemary, supple dried fruits, and dried flowers. Further complexities include bacon, black and red fruit, tea leaf, white pepper, and earthy, leathery nuances. Critics describe it as powerful, gorgeous, peppery, and perfectly balanced, currently at its peak but with years of enjoyment ahead. Given its age, handling this venerable wine with care is key. Old corks and capsules can be fragile, so consider using a Durand or Ah-So opener. Decanting for an hour or two can help it fully express its complex aromas and flavors, but be mindful of any sediment. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F). 🍴 Food pairing suggestions include lamb and poultry. For a more specific experience, consider pairings like duck with vineyard peaches (Canard aux pêches de vigne), roasted woodcock with grapes (Bécasse rôtie aux raisins), or a Provençal leg of lamb (Gigot d'agneau à la provençale). 🥂 This is a rare and elite bottling, known for its phenomenal keeping potential. While it was advised to wait at least seven to ten years from release, the 1998 is now mature and excellent, representing a monument to the greatest Côte-Rôtie has to offer. 【 Consistently one of the best wines made at Côte Rôtie, a monument to the appellation's greatness. 】
BACKGROUND
Domaine Jamet is a renowned wine producer located in Ampuis, at the heart of the northern Rhône wine region in France, celebrated for its traditional Cote Rotie wines. The estate spans about seven hectares (17 acres) of vineyards, scattered across small plots in the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde areas of Côte Rotie. Predominantly, the vineyards are planted with Syrah, complemented by minor plantings of Marsanne, Viognier, and Roussanne. Founded by Joseph Jamet in 1950. By 1976, Domaine Jamet started bottling its own wines. After Joseph retired, his sons Jean-Luc and Jean-Paul ran the estate. Currently, Jean-Paul and Corinne Jamet oversee the domaine, joined by their son Loïc since 2015.
