FEATURES
The 2021 Jean-Marc Vincent Santenay Blanc Les Gravières 1er Cru emerges from a Burgundy vintage that was largely a mixed bag due to unpredictable weather. Despite this, Jean-Marc Vincent's Chardonnay vines in Santenay Gravières are notably high-density plantings, some reaching 17,000 vines per hectare, which contribute to spectacular results. Vincent employs a winemaking philosophy that includes a high percentage of lees to achieve a seductively velvety texture and minimizes sulfur use. The white wines are aged in 10% new oak for an extended period, often upwards of 18 months, with a gradual shift towards larger 500L demi-muids from 350L barrels. Lees are stirred regularly until spring, then left undisturbed until aging is complete.
Expect a mid-yellow color. The nose offers a range of aromas from ripe pear and pomelo to hints of hay and beeswax. Other notes include orange oil, mint, fresh peach, and white flowers. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, ample, and fleshy, with a satiny attack, racy acids, and a mineral-driven profile. Tasting notes also reveal lemon grass, savory, apple, green apple, nutty, cherry, and grilled pineapple. It can present buttery, oak, coconut, citrus, lemon, crushed rocks, and earthy notes. This wine is described as pithy, vibrant, and highly expressive, with notable persistence and complexity, offering a breadth and depth of fruit unusual for the 2021 vintage.
This wine is versatile; it drinks well young but also possesses the structure to improve over the next ten to fifteen years. The Gravières bottling, in particular, will benefit from at least a little patience to fully develop its character.
