FEATURES
The 2018 Wittmann La Borne Riesling Alte Reben hails from a vintage characterized by hot and dry conditions in Germany, which led to a healthy and abundant crop. While many producers found it challenging to maintain acidity, exceptional estates like Wittmann managed to craft outstanding wines. Philipp Wittmann's meticulous approach, including minimal leaf removal to shade the fruit, ensured that the 2018 vintage delivered wines with ample acidity and vivacity, typically with alcohol levels just under 13%. Some critics have drawn parallels between the 2018 vintage and the 2008, noting a similar refinement and balance, particularly in the linear transparency of the reds.
This Riesling presents a super refined profile with steely notes of flint and oyster shell, complemented by fragrant spices and delicate white wildflowers. On the nose, there are also hints of sweet, freshly rolled pastry, fine lemons, and grapefruit, contributing to its complex and somewhat enigmatic character. The palate is remarkably layered and finely detailed, with a guiding acidity that seamlessly integrates stone-fruit and yellow-citrus flavors. It is described as very compressed, dense, and complete, showcasing a muscular expression of the Morstein terroir. Further complexity comes from a pure, deep, and intense bouquet of ripe Riesling berries intermixed with crushed stones, leading to a rich, concentrated, and firmly structured palate with fine tannins. Expect spicy, exotic aromas of peaches, nectarines, grapefruit, flint, gun smoke, and citrus blossoms, with a nervy, steely palate, austerity, and a saline, stony finish. This wine exhibits high-voltage acidity and a slightly more nervy tension compared to the regular bottling. 【 Awarded 99 points by James Suckling, 95 by Wine Advocate, and 95 by Vinous, this wine is a testament to its exceptional quality and is produced from a small plot of over 60-year-old vines on pure limestone soil in the upper Morstein vineyard, with only 800 bottles made. 】
🍴 Food Pairing: This complex Riesling pairs beautifully with root vegetables and squashes. Its acidity and depth would also complement richer seafood dishes, roasted poultry, or even subtly spiced Asian cuisine.
🥂 Fit for Event: With a recommendation to be enjoyed from 2026 onwards, this is a wine built for aging and is perfect for a sophisticated tasting event, a celebratory dinner, or as a prized addition to a serious wine collector's cellar.
