The 1994 Niepoort Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port hails from an 【exceptional 1994 Port vintage, offering both immediate enjoyment and aging potential】. This Port, now 30 years old, was described on release as inky blackish-ruby, breathing black-fruit and earthy aromas with a vinous, hot note. It offers big, mouth-filling fruit flavors of prunes, plums, and blackberries, with hints of fennel and cloves, supported by a sturdy structure of lemony acidity and firm tannins. Critics have praised its dense, spicy, tannic, and rich character with good sweetness and complexity. More recently, it's noted for its strong ruby garnet color, sweet oriental spice notes of cardamom and ginger, a hint of cassis and citrus zest, and an elegant, delicate, and balanced texture. It's considered easy to drink now but still has further aging potential. As an LBV, it's typically filtered before bottling, so decanting for sediment is usually not necessary, but a short period of breathing can enhance its complex aromas. Serve slightly chilled, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
Food pairing suggestions: This Port is perfect with traditional Portuguese Queijo da Serra, Stilton, or other blue cheeses. It also complements egg-based desserts like Pão de Ló (Portuguese sponge cake), as well as chocolate and caramel desserts.
Event suggestions: An ideal after-dinner drink, perfect for winding down an evening with good company and conversation. It's also a wonderful choice for a dessert course, or as a thoughtful gift for someone celebrating a 1994 milestone.
