FEATURES
The 1980 Burmester Vintage Port, now over four decades old, offers a unique journey into the past, showcasing the elegance and complexity characteristic of Burmester's acclaimed Vintage Ports. Vintage Ports are only declared in years of exceptional quality, making this 1980 expression a testament to a fine harvest. Expect a dark garnet color with aromas of confectioned black fruit and sugar lumps, evolving into complex nuances of vanilla, coffee, and jam on the palate. Older Ports like this often display a beautiful evolution, moving from vibrant primary fruit to more nuanced, complex tertiary aromas of dried fruits, nuts, and spices. While still powerful, the tannins will have softened, offering a smoother, more integrated experience. 【Declared Vintage Port from an exceptional year, known for deep flavors and robust structure】 With wines of this age, the cork can be fragile. It's advisable to use a Durand opener or an Ah-So wine opener to minimize the risk of cork breakage. The capsule might also be delicate. Serving advice: Vintage Ports of this age almost certainly require decanting to separate the wine from any sediment that has formed over decades. Decant carefully, pouring slowly and steadily, stopping when you see sediment approaching the neck of the bottle. Handle the bottle gently for a day or two before serving to allow any sediment to settle at the bottom. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 15-18°C (59-64°F), to allow its complex aromas to fully express themselves without becoming too alcoholic. Food pairing suggestions: This rich and warming dessert wine is a delight with strong cheeses and classic chocolate or caramel desserts. Event suggestions: A truly special occasion wine, perfect for celebrating significant milestones, a contemplative after-dinner drink, or a connoisseur's tasting where a rich, complex, and aged sweet wine is desired.
BACKGROUND
Burmester is a historic Port wine house with roots dating back to 1750, originally founded by Henry Burmester and John Nash in London before establishing themselves in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. The house is particularly renowned for its exceptional Tawny and Colheita Ports, but they also produce outstanding Vintage Ports in declared years. Sourced from top vineyards in the Douro Valley, Burmester Vintage Ports are crafted from traditional Portuguese varietals like Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. These wines are known for their robust structure, intense dark fruit flavors, and remarkable longevity, evolving beautifully over decades in the bottle.
