The 2018 Jean-Louis Chave Clos Florentin Saint-Joseph is a significant bottling, marking a new pinnacle of quality for the appellation. This single-vineyard cuvée, first released in 2015, hails from a historic vineyard initially planted by monks in the 15th century. Jean-Louis Chave, the 16th generation, has dedicated 25 years to rebuilding these forgotten plots, acquiring Clos Florentin in 2011. The wine is crafted without new oak, resulting in an exceptionally refined expression with remarkable purity and depth. It's gaining a reputation for collectibility, akin to Chave's Hermitage bottlings, but at a more accessible price point.
Tasting notes reveal a vibrant profile of high-pitched red and blue fruit aromas and flavors, complemented by floral and exotic spice notes. It's juicy and precise, showcasing bitter cherry and blackberry qualities alongside hints of licorice and sweet cola. Further aeration brings out assertive black raspberry, candied violet, olive, and cracked pepper characteristics. The palate is densely packed yet nervy, with lingering floral and mineral notes and a gentle tannic grip. Some tasters also detect smoked meats, cassis, thyme, and a touch of oak that promises to integrate beautifully with age.
🍴 Food pairing suggestions: This robust yet elegant Syrah is a fantastic match for roasted lamb with herbs, duck confit, or a rich mushroom ragu. Its structure and fruit concentration also make it ideal for other bold and structured red meat dishes.
🥂 Event suggestions: Perfect for a special dinner, a gathering of discerning wine enthusiasts, or a celebratory meal where a refined and age-worthy red wine is appreciated. It offers both immediate fruit-forward enjoyment and the potential for further development in the cellar. 【A single-vineyard Saint-Joseph from Jean-Louis Chave, marking a new pinnacle of quality for the appellation and becoming as collectible as his Hermitage bottlings.】
