FEATURES
The 1981 Brunello di Montalcino from Il Casello comes from a vintage rated as 'normal' or three stars, with many Brunello connoisseurs preferring it to the 1980. However, the vintage doesn't appear to be holding up exceptionally well, and any remaining bottles should probably be consumed soon. The growing season in 1981 saw a dry, cool summer followed by an almost perfect autumn, with healthy grapes harvested in late October. The wines are now fully mature. Expect a wine that is on average strong, delicate, elegant, harmonic, and finely and delicately scented. Some older Brunellos can show an intense yet confusing aromatic profile, balancing fruit notes like aged cherry liqueur with savory elements such as black pepper and black olive. The palate often reveals the classic structural hallmarks of Sangiovese: good acidity and a nice grip from the tannins, which can be a little rough on the edges, making it very food-friendly. 【A mature Brunello offering a glimpse into a classic, food-friendly style】. Given its age, this wine embodies an old wine style, where fresh fruit flavors have evolved into sweeter notes of dried figs, candied cherries, hazelnuts, and sun-baked leather, with tannins turning chocolatey and acidity becoming succulent. It's a testament to the longevity of Brunello from reliable producers. When serving, be extremely gentle with the bottle due to its age; old corks can be fragile, and sediment is likely. Decanting is highly recommended to separate sediment and allow the wine to open up, but do so carefully and just before serving to preserve delicate aromas. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F). This wine is best enjoyed in a setting that allows for appreciation of its evolved character, perhaps with a small group of discerning palates. 🍴 This mature Brunello would be excellent with traditional Tuscan cuisine. Think roasted game, rich pasta dishes with meat sauces, or aged Pecorino cheese. The wine's inherent acidity and tannins make it a superb companion to hearty, flavorful meals. 🥂 Perfect for a quiet, reflective evening or a gathering of close friends who appreciate the history and nuanced flavors of aged Italian wines. It's a wine for contemplation rather than a boisterous celebration.
