FEATURES
The 1995 Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru hails from a revered family-run domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis, known for its exceptional Grand Cru holdings. This particular cuvée is crafted from vines over 65 years old, and the 1995 vintage, despite a small crop, produced high-quality wines built for long aging. Interestingly, this vintage has been the subject of critical debate, with initial "prodigious" praise and high scores from Pierre Rovani in 1997, followed by a significantly lower score in 1999, questioning its aging potential. Ponsot's winemaking philosophy involves aging in old oak barrels for two years, avoiding new wood to preserve the terroir and grape character, and refraining from fining or filtering.
Initially described as purple/dark ruby with explosive aromas of dark roasted blueberries, meat, toasted herbs, and earth, the wine was noted for its powerful, full-throttle, chewy, and dense character with layers of concentrated fruit, stones, milk chocolate, and underbrush. Later, it presented as light-to-medium ruby with an amber edge, a slightly alcoholic nose reminiscent of cherry-flavored Bubbleyum, white pepper, and grapefruit. On the palate, it was perceived as a "pale shadow of its former self" with an earthy, stony, red pit fruit-flavored, medium-bodied core, and a "ghost-like trace" of richness. However, other notes suggest it can be round and sweet-tasting, lovely, medium-bodied, and magnificent in balance and complexity.
